The Talking Stick Exhibition at the Roundhouse February 20 opening

“The Talking Stick” from Feb 20 - March 3. For this exhibition, 9 Indigenous artists have been asked to exhibit their own version of the Talking Stick, based on contemporary or traditional versions. The artists are Rebecca Belmore, Lance Cardinal, Merritt Johnson, Peter Morin, Dionne Paul, Michelle Sylliboy, Janice Toulouse, Charlene Vickers, and Xwalacktun (Rick Harry).

Carvings in wood, grasses wrapped in fabric and hair, and a clan of turtles become signals and searchers to remember those lost or missing.

Charlene Vickers is an Anishinabe artist based in Vancouver BC. She graduated from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design (94) and is currently an MFA candidate at Simon Fraser University (2013). Born in Kenora Ontario and raised in Toronto her art explores her Ojibway ancestry and her experiences living and working in urban spaces. Vestige Vagabond, a performance and collaboration with Maria Hupfield was recently presented at the 2011 Santa Fe Indian Art Market hosted by the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts.

Charlene Vickers is an Anishinabe Kwe (Ojibway Woman) living and working in Vancouver BC since 1990. Her cross-disciplinary work of painting, drawing installation and performance have been exhibited in Vancouver, Toronto, New York and across the United States. This past year she has been involved in several projects that include the carving of a series of 10’ tall cedar spears, the wrapping of grasses in cloth and hair, and the creation of a clan of turtles. Her exploratory works are moving into performance with her collaboration Vestige Vagabond, a improvisational endeavour with Maria Hupfield. Vickers and Hupfield officially debuted VV at the 2011 Santa Fe Indian Art Market hosted by the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts. Charlene is exhibiting a new sculptural installation at the grunt gallery in Feb/March 2012. Charlene is currently an MFA candidate at Simon Fraser University for 2013.
